New Year, New You

As our holiday break came to a close, the Duffy crew gathered for our daily stand-up with coffee in our mugs and sleep in our eyes. Though it was technically a Tuesday, the haze of a Monday morning hung heavy in the air. Instead of the usual discussion of projects, tasks and workflows; we chose to keep it light and gab about our resolutions for 2017. Some of these resolutions were meaningful, many were silly. Regardless of their subject matte… Read More

iPads, Brains & Bad Influences

Remember when television was supposed to rot our brains? Before that, reading the noir detective novels of James L. Cain was believed to corrupt young minds and lead to moral depravity. Even Socrates--2,500 years ago--bemoaned the spread of written language, claiming it would impede our memories. In modern times, it’s our obsession with our devices that threatens to stymie our brains. But is this true? While the finger-pointing started… Read More

Design Freak, Meet Tech Geek

A lot is written about the importance of creating a solid company culture. Design studios and ad firms have traditionally led the way in this department. They were offering lifestyle perks like good food, hip music, perhaps cold beer on tap and other cool incentives long before the tech world. But as more large companies bring design in-house, is that really going to happen in the corporate world? Are they also going to set up a Google-esque caf… Read More

Purple Chain

When Nice Ride Minnesota decided to create a purple bike for Prince, they asked us if we thought it was appropriate. We loved the idea, but only if we could come up with something that was subtle and didn’t cheapen the memory of the Minnesota legend. Duffy designer, Cody Petts, pulled a series of iconic Prince photographs to come up with the overall design. The gold fork relates to the Purple Rain motorcycle as well as a subtle rain… Read More

Thoughts on What Makes a “Best Place to Work”

When people like where they work, life is good...for them and for their employers. According to Tony Schwartz in the Harvard Business Review, “Great employers must shift the focus from trying to get more out of people, to investing more in them by addressing four core needs — physical, emotional, mental and spiritual — so they’re freed, fueled and inspired to bring the best of themselves to work every day.” … Read More

Kill the Calendar

They are released in the dark before the workday begins. Spit out from a soulless project management tool. Robo-written, auto-timed threats warn that a project is off schedule. Team members feel guilt, anger or fear for their jobs. But mostly they just blow it off. There’ll be another one in their inbox at 5am tomorrow. It’s not the fault of the product team, the dev team, or the design team. Projects go off course. If you’… Read More

How To Be a Rockstar Developer in 2020

When I interview developers, one of my go-to questions is: “What do you need to know to be successful in [Insert current year here]”? It’s a trick question, but one with good intentions. In 2016, most responses include a list of the currently favored stack components and the tools of the moment. This usually includes: HTML, CSS and JavaScript Angular, React/Redux Node.js GraphQL Caching systems (redis, memcached, … Read More

To be official, it has to come from Jalisco. That’s the law in Mexico. It also has to be a really awesome bottle. That’s the law of modern spirits branding. There is a ton of it made from thousands of acres of the blue agave harvested each year. The branding nightmare lies in distinguishing between over 1,000 different bottles made by over 100 different approved distilleries. … Read More

Here’s to the New Year

As we said goodbye to 2015 we raised our glasses—and the elixir of choice was most likely something wonderful that has only been concocted in the last few years. We are decidedly not in a dry time for the wine, beer and spirits business. It is a boom like few others. And not only as a partner at a firm who has a 30+ year love affair with creating spirits brands and packaging but also as a grandson and great-grandson of true Iris… Read More

Mobile Sales Apps

Over the past few years sales enablement has matured as a practice. There is a wide range of processes, platforms and mobile sales apps in the market that companies have implemented - both custom and off-the-shelf. While some of these tools have lived up to their promises, many have fallen short and failed outright because the apps were just too hard to use due to bad design and a poor user experience. Users experience a lot of negative emotion… Read More
